Our title for this collection of Godwin tales, Chatbot at the End of the World, is an homage to Godwin’s ability to extrapolate from his limited knowledge of early computers. The earliest included Godwin story, 1954‘s “Brain Teaser,” spotlights the frustration felt by a user carefully wording a prompt for an AI with limited computational resources. Godwin, who likely never saw a computer in person before writing his story, hit a bullseye of pathos that can be felt even seventy-ish years on.
