Carmilla
Carmilla Chronicles #1
Sheridan Le Fanu
Laura, the socially isolated daughter of a wealthy Englishman living in an Austrian castle, befriends the mysterious Carmilla, who exhibits a number of disturbing traits and habits. Carmilla features a female protagonist, a female vampire, a mutual attraction between the pair, and the appearance of literature’s first occult investigator, Dr. Hesselius, who would serve as Stoker’s model for Dr. Abraham Van Helsing in Dracula.
Irish Author Sheridan Le Fanu was famous in his day for ghost stories and Gothic horror. He owned a newspaper for which a young Bram Stoker came to work as a theater critic. Le Fanu's Carmilla, one of the first vampire stories in the English language, was a direct inspiration for Dracula and originated the vampire genre as we know it today.
The Carmilla Chronicles
Our edition of Carmilla includes “Dracula’s Guest,” a posthumously published short story by Bram Stoker that describes a vampiric encounter in the same setting as Carmilla. Scholars believe this story to be a reworked version of the original first chapter of Dracula, that its unnamed narrator is meant to be Dracula protagonist Johnathan Harker, and that Stoker originally planned to set his vampire story in continuity with Le Fanu’s.
By including "Dracula's Guest" as a bridge between these two milestone works, we are considering Le Fanu's Carmilla to be the first book in The Carmilla Chronicles, a series that will include an upcoming version of Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Included as an additional bonus is “ELOPE” from the 2022 NIGHTfall Storyline of Cryptoversal’s Wordler Village. Set in a modern Transylvania, "ELOPE" brings Wordler Village into continuity with both Carmilla and Dracula.
